Dr Samson Gwer

Sam teaches neurophysiology at the school of medicine in Kenyatta University. He has research interests in childhood non-traumatic encephalopathy, sickle cell disease, co-morbidity in epilepsy, and neuro-cognitive co-morbidity in HIV disease. He has published a number of papers in these area, and serves as an associate editor in BMC Neurology and East and Central Africa Journal of Medicine.<br><br>He is also the co-founder and executive director of the hybrid entity: Ubuntu Neurology and its non-profit arm, Afya Research Africa (ARA) ( www.afyaresearch.org). In this role, he leads a programme facilitating access to quality health-care by under-served rural communities, and supports an epilepsy and neurology outreach programme. He is a co-founder of Kenya’s National Epilepsy Coordination Committee and has been instrumental in supporting development of epilepsy guidelines and promoting stakeholder coordination in the region. He has been the recipient of ICNA’s Sheilla Wallace, CNS’ Benard D’Souza and AAN’s international scholarship awards.
