Prof Michael Griffiths’ research interests focus on diagnostic and prognostic markers of outcome in brain infections, meningitis and encephalitis (including auto-immune encephalitis).

Mike is currently leading an MRC and Industry (Fast Track Diagnostics/ Siemens Healthineers) funded multi-country study to validate a novel diagnostic blood host-transcript based (TRanscripts Identifying Meningitis [TRIM]) test, developed in Liverpool, to diagnose bacterial meningitis across Europe (Denmark, Netherlands, France and UK).

Mike leads additional studies examining brain infections and outcome in Alder Hey Children’s NHS Trust, UK; Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia; Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi; FioCRUZ, Rio and Recife, Brazil; and the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases, Hanoi.

Mike is also a co-investigator, and diagnostic lead, of several studies improving management of brain infections in the UK and overseas (including India and Nepal). His work is supported through MRC, EU, NIHR and Wellcome Trust funding.
