The Trust is seeking to appoint a full-time (10 PA) substantive Consultant in General Paediatrics with a special interest in Epilepsy/Neurology to lead our well established paediatric epilepsy service. The paediatric epilepsy service is supported by 2 paediatric consultants, 1 Associate Specialist,1 Staff Grade, 2 paediatric epilepsy nurse specialists, neurophysiology, a clinical psychologist and an excellent Child Development service with quarterly joint clinics held with tertiary neurology.

The job plan consists of 10 PAs (8 DCC + 2 SPA) to include 3 OPD clinics per week, plus time allotted for clinical administration and teaching. The post-holder would be part of the general paediatric consultant rota. Currently this operates a Consultant of the Week (COW) model to provide cover for the paediatric ward and Level 1 SCBU on a 1 week in 7 basis with an acute tier 3 on-call commitment of 1 in 6 nights (with internal cover) and 1 in 7 weekends although the on-call commitment may be negotiable depending on the needs of the candidate and the department.

The post-holder will join a paediatric medical workforce of 12 other WTE Consultants, one Associate Specialist, two Speciality Doctors, three Registrars and nine SHOs. A recent expansion in consultant numbers has enabled improved on-site ‘out of hours’ consultant presence in line with the RCPCH “Facing the Future” standards.

The Royal Surrey County Hospital is a leading district general hospital serving a population of 320,000 with a regional cancer service covering a population of 1.2 million. The Trust has an income of over £330 million per year, in excess of 3000 staff, over 75,000 A&E attendances and over 200,000 outpatient appointments per year and approximately 3,000 deliveries per year.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a license to practice and be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at the interview stage.
